Specialty Recognition
In
June 2005, the American Medical Association (AMA) recognized phlebology
as a self-designated sub-specialty of medicine. With this recognition,
the American College of Phlebology (ACP) began pursuit of several
large scale growth initiatives focused on professional education,
public education, and research. In order to pursue these ideas, the
College developed a symbiotic partner, the American College of Phlebology
Foundation.
On
May 10th, 2007, phlebology (PHL) was officially added to the list
of American Osteopathic Association-recognized (AOA-recognized) self-designated
areas of practice focus. This announcement heralded the AOA's awareness
of phlebology as an area of interest to osteopathic physicians.
The American College of Phlebology (ACP) was granted membership to the Specialty and Services Society (SSS) of the AMA, the largest caucus in the AMA House of Delegates, on November 11th, 2007.
In addition to these historic milestones, the American Board of Phlebology, an independent specialty board, was launched in December 2007.
The Foundation plays a key role in bringing recognition to the specialty of phlebology. Each of the initiatives funded by the Foundation contributes significantly to the recognition and acceptance of phlebology and serves to improve standards of patient care.
